     Writing for Children

Magazines

I've written and sold over 130 pieces to magazines for children and adults.  That includes short stories, articles, puzzles and activities.  I write for both the Christian and secular markets.

I like how quickly a short story can be written.  Many are based or inspired by something that happened in my life, the lives of my family or friends.  Some are straight from my imagination.

Magazine articles take more work, because often research is required.  I've done interviews and photo shoots, surveys, read books, looked on the internet, written letters, all for information to write an article.

My First Sale

The very first story I sold was called
"Halloween Isn't Fair."
I was so excited to see it in print.
It came out in 1992
in Jack and Jill magazine.
Here's the cover of the issue.

And here's the first page of the story.  It's hard to see in this tiny picture, but I think illustrator Linda Simmons did a great job with this illustration and the others for the story.

A favorite sale

"Building New Walls" was especially fun for me, not only was the story loosely based on a missions trip that our daughters' youth group went on, but it appeared in the magazine that my girls enjoyed the most when they were teenagers--Brio.  When the issue came out, the girls at church passed it around and told me things like "that didn't actually happen" and "why didn't you use our real names?" and I kept answering, "because this is fiction."

The cover of the March 1996 issue.

Another exciting sale

Editor Marileta Robinson at Highlights for Children had me make changes in this story a couple of times.  "Carrie Rose Hated Red" is the story of a very shy girl, even shyer than I was when I was a kid.

Here's the April 2000 cover of the magazine...

And below is the first page of the story illustrated by
Laura J. Bryant.  I like her drawings very much!  Get a better view of her art at her website by clicking on her name above.
